How to Install Kali Linux: A Step-by-Step Guide

Kali Linux, a popular open-source operating system used for penetration testing, cybersecurity research, and digital forensics, is based on Debian Linux. It comes preloaded with numerous tools for penetration testing, making it a go-to OS for security professionals. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of installing Kali Linux on your system.

Step 1: Download the Kali Linux ISO

  • Visit the official Kali Linux website.
  • Choose the appropriate version of Kali Linux for your system (64-bit or 32-bit). If you're unsure, most modern systems use the 64-bit version.
  • Download the ISO file. It can be used for installation on a USB drive or burned to a DVD.

Step 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive

To install Kali Linux, you'll need a bootable USB drive. Here’s how to create one:

  • Download a USB creation tool such as Rufus for Windows or use dd if you're on Linux.
  • Insert a USB drive (at least 8GB of space) into your computer.
  • Open Rufus (on Windows) and select the downloaded Kali Linux ISO.
  • Set the partition scheme to MBR (Master Boot Record) for BIOS or UEFI systems.
  • Click Start and wait for the tool to create the bootable USB.

Step 3: Boot from USB

  • Restart your computer and press the appropriate key (often F12, F2, ESC, or DEL) to enter the boot menu.
  • Select the USB drive as the boot device.
  • Your computer will boot into the Kali Linux installation menu.

Step 4: Start the Kali Linux Installer

Once you've booted into the Kali Linux installation menu, follow these steps:

  • Choose the Graphical install option to proceed with the user-friendly graphical interface.
  • Select your preferred language, country, and keyboard layout.
  • Configure network settings: If you're connected to Wi-Fi, you'll be asked to enter your network credentials.
  • Set up user accounts and passwords: You'll need to create a root user account and set up a password. This is important for security purposes.

Step 5: Partition the Hard Drive

Next, you will be prompted to partition your hard drive. There are two main options:

  • Guided – Use entire disk: This option automatically partitions your hard drive and is suitable for a fresh installation where you don’t need to preserve data on the disk.
  • Manual: Use this if you want to create custom partitions (e.g., if you want to dual-boot with another operating system).

If you're unsure, go with the Guided option.

Step 6: Install the Base System

Kali Linux will now start installing the base system. This will take several minutes depending on your system’s performance and the speed of your USB drive.

Step 7: Configure the Package Manager

  • You’ll be asked to configure the package manager. If you want to use a network mirror to install additional packages during the installation, select “Yes.”
  • You can choose to enter a proxy server if required, but most users can leave this blank.

Step 8: Install the GRUB Bootloader

The GRUB bootloader allows you to select the operating system to boot when your computer starts. Since Kali Linux will be the primary OS, select Yes to install the GRUB bootloader.

Step 9: Complete the Installation

Once the installation is complete, the system will prompt you to remove the installation media (USB drive). After this, your computer will reboot.

Step 10: First Boot into Kali Linux

  • Your computer should boot into Kali Linux, where you’ll see the login screen.
  • Log in using the root account and password you created earlier.
  • Now you’re all set to start exploring Kali Linux!

Conclusion

Installing Kali Linux is relatively straightforward with the right steps. Whether you’re using it for penetration testing or learning cybersecurity, Kali Linux provides all the tools you need. Don’t forget to regularly update the system using the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

This ensures your system stays up-to-date with the latest patches and tools.
